Did you know that in 1911 the Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre? The art thief hid in a broom closet until the museum closed, stole the painting, hid it under his jacket and walked out the front door. Eduardo de Valfierno was the mastermind behind the theft and had planned to make copies of the original and sell them as the real thing.
He hid the Mona Lisa under his bed in his hotel room for two years and people still kept talking about it. The disappearance of the Mona Lisa is what really made the painting famous. Eventually, in 1913, he was caught when trying to sell the original to an art dealer in Italy. The Mona Lisa is most famous for her facial expression and her mysterious smile. Some people say that the Mona Lisa is actually a self-portrait of da Vinci himself in feminine form. Wich would be totally weird!
